This is the route that made the Eastern Himalayas famous. From the colonial nostalgia of Darjeeling’s steam engines to the spiritual heights of the Pelling Skywalk, and finally, the buzzing energy of Gangtok. It is a greatest-hits compilation of mountains, tea, and Buddhism. If you only visit the North East once, this is how you do it.
Your expedition begins at Bagdogra Airport (IXB) or NJP Station. We navigate the winding roads along the Teesta River, climbing steadily towards Gangtok (5,410 ft). The air cools, the mist settles. Check into your residency. Evening is reserved for a walk down MG Marg, the vibrant, vehicle-free heart of the capital.
Overnight: Gangtok
We ascend sharply to 12,400 ft to witness Tsomgo Lake, a glacial waterbody held sacred by the locals. The landscape shifts from green to stark alpine beauty. Pay respects at Baba Harbhajan Singh Mandir. (Optional: Nathula Pass subject to army permits).
Overnight: Gangtok
Leave the city behind. We drive North, passing the historic Kabi Lungchok and the roaring Seven Sisters Waterfall. This is a journey into the rugged backcountry. Arrive in Lachen (8,800 ft), a remote settlement that serves as the gateway to the high plateau.
Overnight: Lachen
Start at 4:00 AM. We climb to 17,800 ft to stand on the shores of Gurudongmar Lake, one of the highest lakes in the world, surrounded by snow-clad giants. The oxygen is thin, but the view is breathless. Post-visit, we descend and traverse to Lachung for the night.
Overnight: Lachung
Explore the Yumthang Valley, a riot of rhododendrons and alpine flowers (seasonal). Visit the natural Hot Springs to thaw out. Post lunch, we begin the return drive to Gangtok, carrying the silence of the North with us.
Overnight: Gangtok
A scenic transition to West Sikkim. We drive via Ravangla, stopping at the colossal Buddha Park. The roads wind through tea gardens and cardamom plantations before reaching Pelling, where the Kanchenjunga feels close enough to touch.
Overnight: Pelling
Walk on glass at the Chenrezig Skywalk, with the valley floor thousands of feet below. Explore the royal history at Rabdentse Ruins and the spiritual weight of Pemayangtse Monastery. Visit the thundering Rimbi and Kanchenjunga Waterfalls.
We cross the state border into West Bengal, ascending to the "Queen of Hills." Darjeeling greets you with the smell of pine and heritage tea. Evening free to explore the colonial architecture of the Mall Road.
Overnight: Darjeeling
Pre-dawn drive to Tiger Hill. Watch the sun paint Mt. Kanchenjunga in hues of burning orange and gold. On the return, visit the Ghoom Monastery, Batasia Loop, and the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute (Zoo).
Overnight: Darjeeling
Breakfast with a final view of the peaks. We drive down to Bagdogra/NJP for your onward connection. The legend is now yours.
